Plasencia (Cáceres), 1982

David Moreno Rubio (Plasencia, Cáceres, 1982) is an architect and artist. He graduated in Architecture from the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM) in 2008. Between 2009 and 2010 he was a selected researcher at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and later completed the Master in Advanced Architectural Projects (MPAA) at ETSAM in 2013–2014. Since 2008 he has worked at renowned architecture studios in Madrid while developing his own practice. Over these years he has won awards in national and international architecture competitions, both as a collaborator and with proposals of his own. He currently specialises in industrialised construction, applying new building systems and design-and-delivery processes.

His interest in painting began early: he started his artistic training at thirteen and went on to take part in several exhibitions in his home town. His work moves mainly within abstraction, occasionally incorporating figurative elements and exploring the expressive possibilities of matter through different textures, techniques and materials. This plastic search is closely bound to his training as an architect, especially in his interest in composition, space, light and materiality.

Since discovering Belmonte around 2011 he has kept a special bond with the town, its landscape, its architecture and its people. Much of the work in this exhibition was made in Belmonte, drawing inspiration from the surroundings and traditional architecture as well as from the identity and memory of the place. That relationship extends to his professional work as an architect: he has designed and built a house in the old town, conceived in respect for and dialogue with Belmonte's traditional architecture.
